Music This Week - June 20-26
Updated: Jun 20, 2019
It's a veritable cornucopia of music! First of all, it's #IndieOperaWeek! There are lots of indie opera events happening from June 19-27, and I'll be posting an interview with Debi Wong later with more details about the week, how it came about, and what it hopes to achieve.
The TD Jazz Festival also starts on June 21 and runs until July 1, with numerous free and ticketed events.
Thursday UBC Opera presents Don Giovanni, and the opera is presented daily through Sunday
Saturday afternoon has Tapestry Opera's The Book of My Shames and the opera for this evening is Thunderstorm, a tragedy of Shakepearen proportions based on the renowned Chinese play, as well as another performance of The Queen in Me and Don Giovanni
Sunday features an open rehearsal of Heroic Opera's Giuseppe Verdi's Macbeth, Opera Pro Cantati's End of Season Gala, a solo guitar recital by Liel Amdour, and another performance of Thunderstorm and Don Giovanni
Monday is re:Naissance's workshop reading of Jesse: an ASL opera, a newly commissioned work which I'm guessing is going to be amazing and you should really try to go, and the VSO is also playing at Bard on the Beach
Tuesday The Opera Project presents George Bizet's Carmen and Astrolabe Musik presents Unheard, UBC has Variations on an Unoriginal Theme: Music for Two Pianos, and the VSO presents Thorgy Thor and the Thorchestra
Wednesday East Van Opera presents their original work Beauty's Beast at the CMC
And while you should definitely go and see as many opera and musical events as possible, if you find yourself desperately needing to see fluffy balls of fur with short legs and giant ears in competition to be the fastest and cutest, this weekend is the Corgi Races at the Hastings Racecourse!
